“Education is the key to opportunity,” says Beverly Feagin, Champions For Learning board member, chair of the Volunteer Leadership Council and College Goal Sunday Volunteer.
This firm belief in education first led Beverly to become involved with Champions For Learning by volunteering for College Goal Sunday. College Goal Sunday trains volunteers to help families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This resource will make filling out the FAFSA much easier for students and families.
“I first learned about Champions For Learning through a mailing. I was intrigued by it and went to a volunteer breakfast that Champions For Learning was holding. That prompted me to look at all the volunteer opportunities at Champions For Learning and that’s how I found College Goal Sunday.”
Beverly has continued to volunteer for College Goal Sunday, but this was only the beginning of her involvement within Champions For Learning. Beverly soon became a part of the Board of Directors.
“Through the volunteer work I did, I got to see the great work that Champions For Learning is doing in the community, so when I was asked to become a part of the board I was very honored and very happy to join.”
Through her involvement with the Board of Directors, Beverly became Chair of the Volunteer Leadership Council. The work of the Volunteer Leadership Council focuses on spreading the word of how rewarding volunteering with students and parents is.
“It’s a wonderful feeling volunteering at events such as College Goal Sunday,” says Beverly. “Both the parents and students are very appreciative of the help they receive from the volunteers and the volunteers leave knowing they’ve made a difference.”
Champions For Learning provides students the help needed to fill out the FAFSA through “College Goal Sunday.” This opportunity is perfect for community members who are interested in making a difference, but are looking for a short-term commitment. No financial aid experience is necessary!
